Janet Street-Porter has hit out at Liam Payne for his ‘woke speech’ after he split from fiancée Maya Henry, 21, on Monday.

The journalist, 74, slammed the singer, 27, during a discussion about his romance woes on Tuesday’s edition of Loose Women, which saw Coleen Nolan come to his defence as she praised him for not ‘putting the blame’ on Maya.

On Monday, Liam confirmed the split in a podcast, telling Steven Barlett on Diary of a CEO that he needed to ‘work on himself’ but that he felt upset at ‘hurting’ Maya.

And in response, Coleen said: ‘I quite like what Liam is saying, he’s actually going to think about himself and how he should change.’

Ruth Langsford added: ‘I think he was saying as well there seems to be a pattern… he just seems to be a pattern for why his relationships are going wrong and he feels like he needs to step back and work on himself.’

Coleen went on: ‘He’s looking to himself rather than blaming the other person!’

But despite their praise, Janet put her head in her hands in exasperation and groaned as Gloria Hunniford spoke about how he was ‘disappointed’ in himself for putting on weight in lockdown.

Frustrated: As the others praised him, Janet hit out:'Ugh! Oh for goodness sake it's all me me me, 99% of the men in this country think they've put on weight in lockdown'

‘They don’t like themselves, they feel a bit miserable, and women are meant to be going around saying you’re fabulous.’

She then criticised his claim he wanted to ‘work on himself’, as she said: ‘All this woke speech is exhausting me’ and added it was a ‘weird concept.’

Liam and Maya had confirmed their engagement in August 2020 after Liam popped the question during lockdown with a £3 million ring.

The pair were first linked back in August 2018 shortly after Liam’s high-profile split from Cheryl, 37, with whom he shares son Bear, three.

Confirming that he is now single, Liam said on the podcast: ‘I feel like more than anything at this point, I’m more disappointed in myself that I keep on hurting people.

‘That annoys me. I’ve just not been very good at relationships. And I know what my pattern of things is with relationships at this point.

‘I’m just not very good at them so I just need to work on myself before I put myself on to somebody else.’

The Strip That Down singer continued: ‘That’s where I got to in my last relationship.

‘I just wasn’t giving a very good version of me anymore, that I didn’t appreciate and I didn’t like being. I can honestly say I feel better out of it.

‘I didn’t feel good doing what I did but it had to happen. Just a corny way to say it was the best for us both.’

The split will come as a shock to their fans, as although the pair haven’t been photographed together since September 2020, the couple still follow each other on Instagram and have kept their pictures up with each other.
