It has a 19% rating on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes and even won Worst Picture at the Golden Raspberry Awards.

But Jennifer Hudson feels like her 2019 film Cats was misunderstood.

The 39-year-old took the bold stance on the musical fantasy film based on the 1981 Tony Award-winning stage musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber in an interview with Total Film on Wednesday.

The Oscar-winner was asked what she thought of the reaction to the film as she replied: ‘I loved that you asked about Cats!

‘You know what? I think it was a bit overwhelming. It’s unfortunate that it was misunderstood. I think later down the line, people will see it differently. But it is something I am still very proud of and grateful to have been a part of. Yeah, I got to be Grizabella the Glamour Cat!’

Jennifer enjoyed working on the project so much that she even got two cats as pets named after her character and Idris Elba’s Macavity character.

Meanwhile the talented star cut a radiant figure while doing the talk show rounds in New York on Tuesday for her new film Respect.

The multihyphenate, whose latest movie is a biopic of ‘Queen Of Soul’ Aretha Franklin, was spotted leaving Late Night With Seth Meyers.

She was still decked out in her glamorous TV ensemble including a plunging canary yellow cocktail dress that featured a frilly hemline.

Jennifer had been seen in a more casual aspect earlier that day when she arrived at the studio to tape her interview with Seth.

The singing sensation, who won an Oscar for her supporting role in the movie musical Dreamgirls, slipped into a white cardigan.

She teamed the top with a pair of high-waisted salmon sweats and warded off the summertime rays with a pair of butterfly sunglasses.

Since its release last week the movie has earned mixed reviews to the tune of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes but a strong audience response with an A on CinemaScore.

Before her death in 2018 Aretha gave Jennifer her personal approval to play her in the biopic, Jennifer told InStyle in a recent profile.

Jennifer shared: ‘She said: “Jennifer, you’re going to do this.” I’m like: “Well, I’ll do it if she says I can do it, if she thinks I can.” That’s Ms. Franklin!’

While Respect, the Aretha biopic starring Jennifer, has been sanctioned by her family it is not the only recent portrayal to have been made.

Cynthia Erivo starred in a miniseries as part of the National Geographic anthology show Genius which previously covered Einstein and Picasso.

Aretha’s relatives denounced the show and her granddaughter Grace said on TikTok that the makers had refused the family’s attempts to be involved with it.
