The rapid spread of the Indian variant across the UK is threatening to derail the country’s route out of Covid restrictions.
The mutant strain once referred to as the Indian variant – now officially called the Delta variant – has led to a surge of Covid cases across Britain.
The number of reported infections has been above 3,000 for the past six days, which is highly concerning for the Government.

What issues could the PM face from the hospitality industry?
Concerns over the rise in cases and hospitalisations have been met with concerns by the hospitality industry.
June 21 stood as a beckon of hope for the hospitality industry which has been worst hit by the repeated lockdowns.
DON’T MISS:
The industry is desperate to open up Kate Nicholls, chief executive of UK Hospitality has said it is “absolutely critical” that the government continues as planned with its reopening of the remainder of the hospitality sector on June 21.
She said: “About a million jobs will be at risk unless we can get Government support extended or those social distancing restrictions lifted.”
The messages from the Government over the past week have not been overly optimistic that all restrictions will be lifted as planned.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said he “desperately” wants to see an end to the restrictions but says that it is too early to say if the reopening will be able to go ahead as planned.
Despite Mr Johnson pledges to provide clarity on exactly what Stage 4 of the easing of lockdown will look like by the end of May, the hospitality industry has been left without an answer.
Mr Johnson said: “I don’t see anything in the data to suggest that we have to deviate from the roadmap. But we may need to wait.”
He added: “We take decisions as fast as we can but we have to weigh the data.
“On what’s happening now, we are pretty satisfied that the steps we have taken so far on the roadmap have been right.
“I’m afraid we just have to wait a little bit longer to see what’s happening post-step three on 17 May to see exactly what’s happening.”
Weddings, the reopening of nightclubs and the chance of holding large events and live performances may be delayed if the data continues to spark concern.
