Kate Garraway has reflected on the explosive bombshells Dominic Cummings released regarding the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

The GMB host, 54, has become one of Britain’s faces for the crisis after her infected husband Derek Draper, 53, spent a year in hospital having been ‘ravaged’ by the virus and has now returned home with life-changing disabilities.

On the ITV breakfast show on Thursday morning, Kate spoke about Cummings’ seven-hour-long select committee hearing the previous day, in which he showcased the misgivings of the government over the past year.

She said: ‘I spend a lot of time reflecting on how things might have been different, in lots of ways. Both in the government’s handling of it, the scientific advice and the doctors’ advice specifically to Derek. It was definitely confused wasn’t it?’

On Wednesday, Cummings claimed Boris Johnson’s ‘disastrous’ handling of the pandemic had cost tens of thousands of lives.

Launching a dramatic bid to bring down the Prime Minister, he blamed a toxic mix of complacency and indecision for the needless deaths.

He told MPs that senior ministers and advisers, including himself, had fallen ‘disastrously short’, adding: ‘When the public needed us most, the Government failed. Tens of thousands of people died, who didn’t need to die.’

In an extraordinary performance, he launched vicious attacks on the PM, his fiancée Carrie Symonds and Health Secretary Matt Hancock over their personal conduct.

He also claimed the Prime Minister had been ‘unfit’ for office when Covid struck and was not a ‘fit and proper person’ to lead Britain out of the pandemic.

Following Derek’s horrific battle, Kate detailed her feelings about the revelations, saying: ‘I think hindsight is a wonderful thing but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t address what went wrong. Obviously there were things that could have helped.

‘Just as there were doctors who said we could have given this medication at this point, we now know it would have definitely helped, but at the time we feared it might have killed him.

‘I am quite generous to the government generally that they were looking at a situation and thinking ‘what is going to be the most harmful’.

‘If, as Cummings said, Boris Johnson was more obsessed with the economy maybe he genuinely believed that was the biggest risk.

‘It doesn’t mean to say that things like planning for a pandemic and lockdown.. that should have been something that was in place.’

She said: ‘He came home on April the 7th so we’re a few weeks into it now. How is he? Look, he’s devastated by Covid.

‘He can’t really move, his communication is very minimal. There are moments where there’s up, you feel you know he’s in there. He has a lot of memory.

‘But the accessing of it is very limited. He’s a long way from the Derek Draper that you know Andrew but he’s home and he’s alive, he’s asleep now.’
