'Keep your nose out of it!' Britons rage as Nancy Pelosi issues US deal ultimatum

The American Democrat sparked outrage after saying she would block a UK-US trade deal if Brexit threatened the Good Friday Agreement which ended 30 years of violence in the province. Her outburst came amid simmering tensions in Northern Ireland over how the withdrawal agreement has effectively kept it in the EU’s customs union.

This has outraged its Unionist community – who claim that the checks between the province and the rest of the UK threaten their British identity.

In response the UK has urged the EU to renegotiate the deal – something that it has so far been unwilling to do.

Brexit Secretary Lord Frost has repeatedly said he is willing to trigger Article 16 of the Protocol, which allows him to unilaterally suspend aspects of the deal, if the EU refuses to renegotiate aspects of the international treaty.

As the stalemate continues, Ms Pelosi – the speaker of the United States House of Representatives – used her platform to warn Britain what could happen if The Troubles restarted because of Brexit.

“The woman is a socialist, left wing pariah with too much power.”

Reader Tactica said: “(Ms) Pelosi should keep her nose out of UK domestic issues and politics.

“I am certain she would not take kindly to the UK expressing views over the Mexican border issues. So stay out of ours.

“The 1998 (Good Friday) Agreement was formulated when we were part of the EU.

“There has been a seismic change since then. Would she insist that Texas had open borders with Mexico?”

Replying to that comment, DE Derek Hough said: “How I wish she would keep her nose out of ALL US issues as well.”

A user called “Aview” wrote: “Absolute cheek lecturing the UK about NI (Northern Ireland) when they turned their backs on Afghanistan.”

Meanwhile, reader with the username The Grandma questioned: “Why do the Americans feel they have to poke their noses everywhere?”

Ms Pelosi has also voiced her concerns over the protocol to Boris Johnson personally.

After meeting the Prime Minister last Friday, she said: “Respectful of the will of the British people and Brexit, I reiterated the strong bipartisan support that the Good Friday Accords continue to enjoy in the United States Congress.

“Our hope is that the ongoing negotiations will yield a positive outcome that recognises this landmark agreement.”
