Lady Louise's cute nickname for her grandma – learning she is Queen was 'shock to system'

Lady Louise, Prince Edward’s eldest child, calls the Queen “grandmama”. Louise, 17, does not participate in royal engagements and neither she nor brother, James, use HRH titles.

However, Louise does have a particularly close relationship with her “grandmama”.

She shares with Queen Elizabeth II a love of horses – as both are avid riders.

After Prince Philip passed away in April, Lady Louise even paid a touching tribute to her late grandfather by driving the Duke of Edinburgh’s carriage at this month’s Royal Windsor Horse Show.

While the pair have a close relationship, Louise has not always been aware of the importance of her grandmother.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, recalled the moment her daughter realised who “grandmama” was.

She told the BBC: “It happened a little while ago. It was much more of a shock to the system.”

“It was only when she was coming home from school and saying, ‘Mummy, people keep telling me that grandma is the Queen’.”

“And I asked her, ‘Yes, how does that make you feel?’ And she said, ‘I don’t understand’.”

Fitzwilliam added: “With the number of working royals now fewer and most being from the older generation until George, Charlotte and Louis are able to take on royal duties, there may well be charitable ventures she may wish to support in future years and from that may follow occasional royal engagements.”

But the royal expert also suggested Louise is expected to enrol at university soon.
