Lewis Hamilton 'kicked up the backside' by Max Verstappen in F1 title fight

Ex-Formula One driver, Gerhard Berger, believes Lewis Hamilton is getting extra motivation from Max Verstappen in the world title fight, more than he would a team-mate alongside him.

Tensions are building ahead of the first triple-header of the season, with Hamilton and Verstappen gearing up for an intense three weeks of racing, starting in Paul Ricard on Sunday.

The pair have gone wheel-to-wheel for many races this season, before Mercedes suffered a rare dip in form, with just seven points over the past two races, whilst Verstappen and Red Bull lead the standings heading into round seven.

For several years now, Hamilton has mostly come under pressure from his Mercedes team-mates in championship battles, most memorably an intense feud with Nico Rosbeg, who beat the seven-time world champion to the title in 2016.

And Berger, who was Ayrton Senna’s team-mate at McLaren in the early 90s, reckons Hamilton will find it easier to battle with an outsider but admitted he will be getting an extra boost of competitiveness from Verstappen.
