Children at Mount Street Primary School were evacuated following the lightning strike today. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue were called to the scene at 9.57am. There had been reports of the smell of burning in the building.

No injuries have been reported from the strike.

Two crews also attended the scene today.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “We received the call at 9.57am and two crews initially attended.”

A witness said the children had been evacuated to greenhouses following the lightning strike.

This comes as forecasters issued a yellow weather warning for Plymouth today.

Indeed, they issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across the majority of the south west.

The warning is in place between 11am to 9pm on Wednesday.

As reported by Eve Watson of Plymouth Live, UK Weather Chase branded the storm front as a “monster”.

It said: “We now have a few strikes just off the Devon coast which should start to push into land.

“However main focus is the one over northern France.

“It’s a monster!! Stay tuned for more.”

As of 11.27am, fire crews left the scene.

The witness added: “They were evacuated to the school playground and took shelter in the greenhouses all are re-entering the building now and fire service is still on scene.”

The Met Office has issued further yellow weather warnings across large parts of the country.

It is expected, Wales, the north of England, Scotland, the Midlands and parts of the southwest could see thunderstorms on Thursday.

From tonight to Sunday, the Met Office said: “Clear spells across northern England and much of Scotland, whilst rain affects the far northwest.

“Showery rain moving north across other parts of England and Wales, some heavy with thunder.

“Heavy, thundery downpours breaking out across parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, whilst more persistent rain affects northern and western Scotland.

“Some bright spells in between. Warm and humid.

“Cloudy on Friday with patchy rain or showers for many.

“Generally becoming fine and brighter from the northwest over the weekend, although some rain may continue to affect the south.”

This is a breaking story, more to follow…
