Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has picked ex-Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud as the toughest opponent he has ever faced. Van Dijk joined the Reds from Southampton in 2018 and has gone on to win the Premier League and the Champions League during his time at Anfield.
“Olivier Giroud was the striker I’ve struggled against the most,” Van Dijk told former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville on The Overlap. “I always felt like I had him but, somehow, he always managed to score against us.
“Whether it was for Arsenal, Chelsea or France, he always scored. The year we won the Premier League in the 2019/20 season, we beat Chelsea 5-2. We were winning 3-0 and he scored a scrappy goal, and I thought to myself, ‘we’re winning comfortably, but he’s still scoring against me.’”
Giroud scored 105 goals in 253 appearances during a five-and-a-half year spell with Arsenal before moving to Chelsea at the start of 2018. He then bagged another 39 goals in 119 matches for the Blues before quitting the Premier League to join AC Milan last summer.
