Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has slammed two key refereeing decisions during their dramatic 3-2 defeat at West Ham on Sunday evening. Victory for the Hammers called time on a mammoth 25-match unbeaten run for the Reds, and the result was certainly not without controversy.
It was an afternoon to forget for goalkeeper Alisson, who was at fault, albeit to different extents, for all three West Ham goals.
Notions of keepers being a protected species were cast aside for the first goal, when Hammers pressure from a corner forced the Brazilian to put the ball into his own net.
A Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick brought the scores level, but two quickfire strikes from Pablo Fornals and Kurt Zouma put the game beyond doubt for David Moyes’ side.
Divock Origi’s late consolation proved to be just that as Liverpool spurned the opportunity to close the gap on Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table.
After the final whistle, Klopp was less than pleased about the decision for Alisson’s own-goal, as well as a strong challenge from Aaron Cresswell on Jordan Henderson.
“Key moments today. The goals and some situations have to go another way.
“The first they score is a foul on the goalkeeper, the arm goes into Alisson’s arm so how can he catch it? That makes no sense.
“Aaron Cresswell’s was a reckless challenge on Jordan Henderson, even when he touched the ball before so you have to control your body. Two situations which were influential but West Ham did not make the decisions and they won the game.
“What can Alisson do? That is why the goalie is protected. If a player goes up in the air with his arm, it is an important part of the body for the goalkeeper.
“People will say I am making excuses but I am calm. You need normal decisions from a referee and he did not do that.
“We can be better 100%, you cannot always play your best result, you have to grind out a result but they scored three goals and we didn’t.”
On a weekend when Chelsea dropped points against Burnley, Klopp will be left to rue a missed opportunity against the Hammers, managed by Liverpool’s old foe David Moyes.
However, the east London side delighted the crowd with their display as they exerted their dominance from set-pieces.
Heading into the international break, Klopp may be left with a bitter taste in his mouth after decisions which he felt did not go the Reds’ way.
West Ham, meanwhile, power up to the dizzying heights of third in the table after 11 games played.
