Minamino was signed on the back of Salzburg’s impressive run in the 2019 Champions League group stages, in which Erling Haaland also starred before joining Dortmund.

With Salah, Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota the established stars of Liverpool’s attack, the 26-year-old has been unable to nail down a place in Klopp’s team, and spent the second half of last season on loan at Southampton.

He did impress, however, against Norwich in the Carabao Cup last month, scoring twice in a 3-0 victory, and was praised by Klopp after the game following his recovery from a recent injury.

“Players need time to get back on track after an injury,” said Klopp, adding: “He deserved his two goals. His first one was really good awareness, quick in mind and finished the situation off.
