Britons are set to bathe in glorious sunshine this Bank Holiday weekend and into next week as an area of high pressure grips the UK. An extended period of balmy conditions is set to begin this Saturday as the mercury reaches highs of 21C, according to Netweather maximum temperature maps.
Prolonged spells of sunshine are set to continue for the following five days with temperatures creeping up to sweltering highs of 24C on Thursday, June 3.
The latest maximum temperature charts show vast areas of the UK turning a shade of red as searing heat moves in from the continent.
NetWeather.TV forecaster Paul Michaelwaite said: “It’s not too often the words high pressure, sunshine and warmth get used in conjunction with a Bank Holiday weekend, but this time around it’s on.
“High pressure will be in charge of our weather as we head through the weekend, bringing lots of fine, sunny weather.”
The spring Bank Holiday weekend is expected to begin with temperatures reaching 21C in the south of England on Saturday.
Netweather charts show much of England, Wales and even Scotland hitting the high-teens by 6pm.
On Sunday and into Bank Holiday Monday, an area of high pressure will begin to push in a northwesterly direction, with highs of 23C in the northwest of England.
Parts of Scotland, Wales and the south of England can also expect the mercury to peak in the high-teens and low 20Cs.
On Tuesday, June 1, the temperature maps show mercury will continue to climb above 20C for southern, central and northern areas, with highs of 23C in London and Glasgow, and 21C in the Midlands.
By the middle of next week, the area of high pressure will become more concentrated on central and southeastern areas, with 23C forecast on Wednesday and even 24C on Thursday, June 3.

“Then into the start of the weekend, the front should move away, to allow plenty of sunshine across much of the country with temperatures peaking at 17-22C generally.”
BBC Weather’s long-range forecast from Monday, May 31 says: “High pressure over the Bank Holiday weekend will gradually begin to slide away to the southwest in early June.
“However, this might take a good part of the week, so a lot of drier and sunnier weather is expected to start.”
