‘I was scared of her’: Loose Women’s Kelle Bryan reveals her mother would smack her as a child which ’caused a separation between them’
Kelle Bryan has revealed her mother would smack her regularly as a child.
The actress, 46, made the admission on Monday’s episode of Loose Women and said it ’caused a separation’ between herself and her mother Marilyn.
Discussing whether all children go through an ‘I hate you’ phase with their parents, Kelle said: ‘Mum believed in smacking, I was hit on a regular basis. I was very submissive because I knew what would come.
Candid: Kelle Bryan told Loose Women on Monday her mother would smack her regularly as a child and claims it caused a ‘separation between them’
‘A shoe, hairbrush, whatever she had you got it. Things have changed a lot culturally since then.’
Kelle, who is mother to son Regan, nine, and daughter Kayori, seven, with husband Jay Gudgeon said she does not hit her children and would never allow anyone else to either.
She said: ‘I knew it definitely caused a separation between myself and my mum because I was scared of her.
‘I don’t hit my children and I don’t allow anyone else to hit my children and I just prefer to take a different approach to discipline.’

Kelle added that her children sometimes ‘push her’ and she prefers punishments like ‘time out’ to discipline them.
She said: ‘Sometimes it’s kind of odd, if one of them was misbehaving she [her mother] will say, “they wouldn’t have done that if you’d smack them.”
‘They do push me but I just feel like I know what that made me feel like. It’s a long haul. You have to do a lot of educating and I do the time out. There’s more than one way to skin a cat.’
It comes after Kelle revealed she taught her son about slavery and told him about her own experiences of racism when he was discriminated against aged five.

The Hollyoaks star spoke candidly with The Mirror about how she reacted to her son being told by another child he couldn’t play with a toy because ‘he was brown’.
While she claimed the matter was dealt with immediately, Kelle said: ‘I educated Regan about slavery, I shared some of my experiences from my childhood and what I went through, I experienced a lot of racism growing up.
‘I also took him to the slave museum in Liverpool. Now he handles things really well.’
In June last year, Kelle explained the shocking racial abuse her son experienced in full on Loose Women, saying he was told he ‘couldn’t play with a particular toy because he was brown.’
Family: Kelle, who is mother to son Regan, nine, and daughter Kayori, seven, with husband Jay Gudgeon said she does not hit her children and would never allow anyone else to either
She detailed at the time: ‘He was told he couldn’t play with a particular toy because he was brown, I dealt with that quite fiercely because he came home and was so upset about it.
‘I raised them quite colourless but the world they live in doesn’t reflect that. Unfortunately he was told by another child that he couldn’t play with this toy because he was brown.’
Of how she dealt with the situation, Kelle added: ‘I went to the parent and I asked are you aware of what happened and I said I was so sad about what happened, not in an aggressive way, and the parent was so horrified that their child had said this.’
