Love Island star Jake Cornish has admitted his split from Liberty Poole is still ‘very raw,’ after the pair decided to end their romance and quit the show on Friday.

Speaking on Monday’s This Morning, the pair insisted they ‘made the right decision’ by leaving the show, with Liberty adding that it was ‘fair’ to give the other couples a better chance of winning the show.

Liberty added that while she still loves Jake, she began to feel like she was ‘treading on eggshells’ around him, and decided to ‘put herself first’ and call off their relationship.

Asked how he was feeling after the split, Jake said: ‘Obviously still very raw but my feelings haven’t changed for Lib.

‘We’ve been out for four or five days, it’s very raw being away from her, I’ve missed her and I never had that feeling in there. The more reality hits the more the relationship hits.’

Appearing live from Mallorca, Jake admitted he’s unsure where he would be if he hadn’t split from Liberty, telling Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford: ‘it’s a tricky one You’ve thrown it on me, haven’t you?’

‘Enough is enough at the end of the day my head was in overdrive being in there is so intense and it comes to a point where we’re at a wall. I’m quite glad she put it on me. It’s done now.’

Despite the end of their relationship, the pair were also coy on whether they could rekindle their relationship on the outside.

Jake added: ‘It will be easier on the outside but I don’t know we haven’t spoken about anything. We’ve just got our phones back I only got her number last night. I’d like to think so but it takes two to tango.’

‘I’m feeling good to be fair it was contributing factors that led it to end I made the right decision in there for me at the time,’ Liberty said.

‘There’s no animosity between me and Jake. You can never say never but for now, we made the right decision.’

Reflecting on their split, which left many Love Island fans in tears, Liberty told Eamonn and Ruth: ‘It was really difficult.

‘I still have love for him but I wasn’t happy anymore and I’ve got to put my own feelings first and be happy and bite the bullet and that’s what I did.’

Liberty was then asked what was the exact thing that caused her to get ‘the ick’ during her relationship with Jake, with the star adding: ‘I think it was just a lot of different things and an intense environment and the energy gelt off and that’s why you guys saw me the way I was.

‘I felt like I was treading on eggshells and we didn’t have the same energy and we wasn’t getting on and that’s why I called things off.

‘I will say on Jake’s behalf it was reciprocated at the start that was a genuine connection but as we overcame challenges we weren’t communicating and after the honeymoon phase we realised we went the same people. I

‘I wouldn’t change my journey. I’ve had so many girls reach out to me and say you’re my role model you’ve taught me self love and to me that means more than anything… more than getting to the final.

‘Obviously, I still love him it’s not just going to switch off like that it’s hard still being around him but if you’re not happy you have to put yourself first.’

Last week, the Birmingham beauty announced she had chosen to walk after breaking up with the water engineer.

Gathering the group around the fire pit after their final date on a yacht Liberty held back tears as she explained: ‘It was our dream date and we talked things through and we have come to the conclusion to go our separate ways.’

‘We are going to leave the villa together. We don’t want to be here and take up the place when you are all strong couples.’

‘It’s a time for you to be happy in your strong couples and we don’t want to drain the life out of that. We have to take ourselves out of the situation. We are walking out on good terms and together. We love you.’

There are now only four couples left after Liberty and Jake departed the villa following the end to their seven-week romance.

Battling it out for the £50,000 prize are couples: Millie Court, 24 and Liam Reardon, 22; Chloe Burrows, 25, and Toby Aromolaran, 22; Kaz Kamwi, 26, and Tyler Cruickshank,  26; and Faye Winter, 26, and Teddy Soares, 26.
