Luis Suarez names Liverpool player who has 'improved a great deal' since he left club

Luis Suarez has hailed Jordan Henderson for his marked improvement since joining Liverpool. The midfielder recently passed a decade with the Reds after arriving from Sunderland for £20million in 2011, linking up with the team some six months after Suarez signed for the club.

The Uruguayan forward is widely recognised as one of the most talented players to ever pull on the Liverpool shirt.

And aside from his past misdemeanours, it would be an honour for any player to receive praise from the now Atletico Madrid striker.

The pair will line up against each other on Wednesday in the Champions League group stage, having played on the same side for the best part of three seasons between 2011 and 2014.

Henderson is the last surviving member of the squad Suarez left behind and on his second return to Anfield, he is expected to receive a good reception.

Comparing the Henderson he once knew to the player who will face him, Suarez was complimentary about the improvements he has made on the pitch.

Suarez hit 82 goals in 133 appearances having joined in a £22m deal from Ajax and was signed while Reds legend Kenny Dalglish was in charge.

But he only won the EFL Cup in 2012 with Liverpool during his three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield, after narrowly missing out on the 2013-14 Premier League title.

He experienced success on a yearly basis when moving to Barcelona in 2014, winning LaLiga four times and the Champions League in 2014-15.

Now with Atletico, he played a crucial role in helping Los Rojiblancos clinch only their second domestic title under Diego Simeone with 21 goals in LaLiga last season.

“I think that, as a captain, he has matured a lot,” he added,

“During his career, he has helped the club grow, with his personality and playing better football.

“He’s a role model for English football. Winning a Premier League title with Liverpool must have been fantastic for him, and it’s made him greater than he already was.”

Henderson recently signed a new contract with Liverpool until 2025 after months of speculation over his future and agreed with Suarez that he has reached another level in his time with the club.

“I’m in a different place of course, as a player and as a person, from when I first walked in,” he told the club’s official website.

“I’ve learned and grown a lot over my time here, and I’ve got to thank a lot of people for that.

“I’ve loved every minute of it, even when I look back at the tough times, I was still enjoying being a part of this football club.

“The longer I can do that, the better for me really. I want to be here as long as possible, I’ve always said that.

“To continue this journey is incredible for me and my family, and I hope the fans and the club feel the same way.”
