According to police 19 pigs made it onto the tarmac between junctions 12 and 11 at about 10.15am.

Police officers managed to remove the pigs, and the road is now reopened, but delays remain.

Highways North West tweeted: “M62 westbound, J12 (Eccles Interchange, M60, M602) to J11 (Warrington East, Birchwood, A574) traffic has been temporarily stopped due to a number of pigs which are being a bit of a swine and won’t move.”

North West Motorway Police added: “Highways England have the Traffic Stopped #M62 J12 to J11 Eastbound.

“This is due to several reports of “Pigs” on the motorway…. actually 19 Pigs on the Motorway.

“Police are popping [over] to help our colleague. We’ll keep you updated.”

Photographs from the scene show police officers herding the pigs off the road using brooms.

Shortly before 11am the pigs were returned to their farm, allowing the motorway to be fully reopened.
