Man City 'still confident' of signing Harry Kane despite £100m Jack Grealish transfer

Manchester City reportedly remain hopeful of securing a £150million deal for Tottenham striker Harry Kane, despite moving closer to signing Jack Grealish from Aston Villa.

Villa captain Grealish was believed to have headed up to Manchester on Wednesday to finalise a move to the Premier League champions.

A potential £100m transfer for the 25-year-old would break the British record for a fee paid by a club.

The £89m fee Manchester United paid for Paul Pogba has surprisingly stood as the record for five years, despite clubs across Europe spending triple figures as far back as Paris Saint-Germain’s double 2017 swoop for Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

But City are prepared to smash their own record should they sign Grealish by splashing out an extra £150m on Kane.

However, Kane has not been seen at the training ground all week.

There will be an appearance for the forward soon, though, as he is expected to hold showdown talks with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy before the close of the week, according to the Star.

It is in those discussions that Kane is likely to once again reiterate that he wants to exit in search of silverware.

A major team honour has alluded Kane throughout his senior career and he is determined that this summer will be one of his final chances to earn a big move.

Kane was denied a transfer to Man City last summer but believes he struck a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with Levy, who in turn will remain firm in his stance that his prized asset will not be sold.

This transfer saga is likely to have at least partially disrupted new boss Nuno Espirito Santo’s maiden pre-season as Spurs boss.

The Portuguese coach has enjoyed on-field success, with an unbeaten friendly schedule so far, but will undoubtedly have his final 10 days of preparation for the 2021-22 season dominated by talk of Kane’s future.

Nuno’s Man City counterpart, Pep Guardiola, is hoping for progress on deals for Kane and Grealish in the coming days having endured a frustrating July.

Just four of Guardiola’s regular first-teamers turned up to the opening weeks of pre-season training, with his squad decimated due to senior stars’ participation in the Euros, the Copa America, the Gold Cup or the Olympics.

Teams for friendlies against Preston North End, Barnsley and Blackpool have been cobbled together. Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan, Benjamin Mendy and Riyad Mahrez have starred alongside fringe players and academy stars.

A mixed City team is likely to face Leicester City in Saturday’s Community Shield final.

Kane’s transfer situation has added spice given City travel to Tottenham in their opening day of the season, with the striker perhaps unsure for whom he might feature in the fixture.

Should Grealish’s transfer be completed, the 25-year-old will wait a little longer for an appearance against his former side. City face Villa on November 30.
