Man Utd must show ruthless streak to build on Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane transfers

0

Manchester United are enjoying a brilliant summer transfer window, with Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane both set to arrive at Old Trafford ahead of the 2021/22 season. Sancho and Varane were the club’s top two priorities, but with five weeks left, time remains for United to build on their work and make the window even sweeter.

United’s business has been a long time in the making. Both players have been scouted heavily by the club and touted heavily for transfers by the media.

The club will rightly be delighted to have landed Sancho for £73million – significantly less than they were quoted last summer – and World Cup-winner Varane for just £35m.

Varane had entered the final 12 months of his Real Madrid contract and was keen to move on after 10 years at the club, but in the age of rampant transfer fee inflation the deal is still undeniably a good one.

The fact both transfers have been wrapped up with the best part of five weeks remaining in the summer window means opportunities remain.

With doubt over the future of Paul Pogba amid strong interest from Paris Saint-Germain, central midfield is an obvious area of interest.

Pogba is under contract for another year, but if PSG’s interest is as serious as reported then United could be tempted to cash in now.

The Athletic reports that any ‘further signings are likely to depend on outgoings’ because United have lost £127m (€150m) during the coronavirus pandemic.

Leaving aside Pogba’s situation, United have a clear need to trim their squad and earn valuable funds which can be reinvested.

This is no time for complacency or sentimentality. Finding a buyer for Phil Jones is not an easy task – Eurosport reports they are considering letting him go on a free transfer to free up space – but one that should be relished nonetheless.

However, Diogo Dalot and Andreas Pereira were both sent on loan to Serie A last season and are both capable of earning useful transfer fees.

Then there is Jesse Lingard, who has a clear suitor in West Ham. Lingard was brilliant on loan with the Hammers in the second half of last season, but United’s judgement should not be clouded.

Lingard would make a solid signing for several sides and United should be open to letting that happen. His exit could be an important step on the way to adding another name to the club’s prestigious summer transfer list.
