Manchester United are about to give Raphael Varane something truly exciting

Manchester United are getting there. By getting there, we mean close to getting Raphael Varane. A deal for the Real Madrid star is edging closer, with the France international looking increasingly likely to follow Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton to Old Trafford.

Manchester United knew they needed a big summer transfer window.

After losing the Europa League final to Villarreal, the mood around the club was very doom and gloom. The wait for silverware is four years and counting, while that figure doubles when it comes to their wait for the Premier League title.

Speaking after that game, Solskjaer was his usual Mr Nice. But there was a strong message in his words when he made it clear to the Glazers that resting on their laurels would be the wrong thing to do.

“I’ve been delighted with the effort, the desire, the determination of all of the players, I can’t fault them at all,” Solskjaer said.

“We’ve probably done as well as anyone could imagine.

“We are here now, we need to do better, we need to work better, work harder, cleverer. But as I said two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and the squad all together is important for us to go even further.

Some players want silverware guaranteed. That’s why Harry Kane would prefer to move to Manchester City, where they’re virtually assured to lift something every year.

But United have a different bait to dangle.

This is a club that has lost their way ever since Sir Alex Ferguson walked away. David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho never came remotely close to delivering the biggest prizes on the planet.

Neither has Solskjaer, in fairness. Yet there’s a positivity around the club that they’re on the right track, slowly but surely climbing up the ladder of the footballing elite once again.

For a player like Varane, it’s an exciting project.

He’s won the lot at Real Madrid. A haul of 18 major trophies, including four Champions League titles and three La Liga crowns.

He’s also a World Cup winner. A European Championships gold medal is the only thing missing from his repertoire. He does have a silver, mind.

So the chance to restore United to their former glories is certainly an attractive challenge.

This is very much an exciting project to be a part of. The squad looks the best it has in years, arguably since the days where Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney ran defences ragged.

In goal, they have three great goalkeepers in Heaton, David De Gea and Dean Henderson.

At the back, full-backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw are considerably improved. Varane, along with Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly, is solid.

In midfield, United expect to keep Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek. They, along with Nemanja Matic, Fred, Scott McTominay and young guns James Garner and Hannibal Mejbri, are options aplenty.

And then, up top, is a formidable attack.

Sancho, along with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani, has the potential to blow opposition teams out of the water.

    Exciting, truly exciting.

And if Varane does sign, United won’t be just targeting a place in the top four next term. It will be a statement, a sign, they’re ready to go for the title at long last.
