Manchester United's formidable 25-man squad if Glazers make five key signings

6 mins read

If Manchester United get their way, their squad will be reinforced this summer. Jadon Sancho, Declan Rice, Raphael Varane, Tom Heaton and Kieran Trippier appear to be their preferred transfer targets at the current moment in time, though links to Cristiano Ronaldo remain ongoing. So Express Sport will now take a look at how their 25-man squad for the Premier League could look next term if they’re able to sign the aforementioned quintet.

Goalkeepers: Henderson, De Gea, Heaton

Though David De Gea has been linked with a move away from United, that still seems unlikely to happen.

The Spain international simply earns too much at Old Trafford to be easily offloaded, even if the likes of Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are big admirers.

But while that’s the case, United still want to add to their goalkeeping roster.

Joel Pereira and Lee Grant will both be leaving, while Nathan Bishop and Matej Kovar could leave on loan.

And United are currently on the verge of signing Tom Heaton, who is a free agent after leaving Aston Villa.

Defenders: Wan-Bissaka, Trippier, Maguire, Varane, Lindelof, Bailly, Shaw, Telles

United could finally get Phil Jones off the books this summer, while Brandon Williams is a transfer target for Southampton.

So this summer could be a case of two in and two out when it comes to their defenders.

United are keen to bring Trippier back to the Premier League, believing he can galvanise Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back.

And Varane is seen as the perfect player to partner Harry Maguire.

It’s feasible Axel Tuanzebe will be cut loose as well, with the youngster tracked by Aston Villa ahead of the transfer window reopening.

Midfielders: Fred, McTominay, Hannibal, Rice, Pogba, Van de Beek, Fernandes

United could make a sole signing in central midfield.

And they’re big admirers of West Ham midfielder Rice, despite the Hammers wanting £100million for their prized asset.

One way to finance that deal will be trimming the wage bill, meaning a departure for Nemanja Matic is possible.

Solskjaer has placed great faith in youth throughout his time in charge. Therefore, fans could see more of Hannibal Mejbri next time out.

The teenager was recently called up by Tunisia and is viewed as one of the hottest products of the United academy at the current moment in time.

Forwards: Rashford, Cavani, Sancho, Greenwood, Amad, James, Martial

United want to sign Sancho.

They’ve tried, and failed, three times in the past. But, this summer, they’re hopeful it’ll be fourth time lucky.

Facundo Pellistri should be loaned out again, with Deportivo Alaves keen to land him. And while Shola Shoretire has immense potential, he’s now expected to become a first team regular just yet.

Other than that, the rest of United’s attack should be straightforward.

With Edinson Cavani staying put, the club have decided to put their pursuit of a younger centre forward on hold until next year.

Solskjaer’s transfer message

Speaking after United’s Europa League final defeat to Villarreal, Solskjaer admitted his side needed reinforcements.

“I’ve been delighted with the effort, the desire, the determination of all of the players, I can’t fault them at all,” Solskjaer said.

“We’ve probably done as well as anyone could imagine.

“We are here now, we need to do better, we need to work better, work harder, cleverer. But as I said two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and the squad all together is important for us to go even further.

“Because I’m sure our contenders or challengers will also want to improve and we want to improve as much as we can.”
