The series debuted in 2018, following the passengers of Flight 828, who, after seemingly disappearing without a trace five years ago, suddenly reappears.

The show ran for three seasons on NBC, but was canceled in June just days after the third season wrapped up.

The producers shopped the show to Netflix initially, but the streaming service also passed just a few days later, seemingly dashing the show’s plans for a revival.

However, after the first two seasons debuted on Netflix shortly thereafter, the show shot up the charts to become the top streaming series.

Rake revealed that he initially had a six-season arc planned for the show, and he’s now tasked with condensing three seasons of material into a final 20-episode season, the culmination of a wave of emotions in just a few months.

‘It’s such a combination of emotions, from gratitude to humility to shock and awe and incredible excitement,’ Rake said.

There was also a massive #SaveManifest fan campaign to save the show on social media, which Rake said was ‘incredibly cool.’

‘It was important to me to stay in communication with the fans. I was enjoying this incredible wave of new love and support for the show as we blew up on Netflix in June and July,’ he said.

Though he said a lot of fans were asking why they should watch the show on Netflix if it had no ending, which Rake said was, ‘a fair question.’

‘If you go back and look at my tweets and Instagram and Facebook posts over the past two months, I —probably in a way that really frustrated fans — coyly continue to offer up these quasi-positive aphorisms to keep the faith,’ Rake said.

As for the final season, Rake insisted he’s not making any major changes to how he envisioned ending the show.

‘The endgame won’t change at all. For those who’ve been tracking this story through June and July, they’ll remember that I was hopeful in the early weeks after cancellation that someone would step up and allow us to make something as modest as a two-hour movie,’ Rake said.

Still he added a movie would not have been ‘ideal,’ but still, after mentally working through the ending for two, six, or nine episodes, 20 episodes feels like, ‘an embarrassment of riches’ by comparison.

He added his goal of six total seasons was to, ‘get to the series finale in real time in accordance with the five and a half years that the passengers had back,’ but now that has to be adjusted.

He added the writers room is opening this week and he’s hopeful that all of the primary cast members will be back, though it’s unclear when filming may start.
