Marks & Spencer brings in huge changes to 11 food stores – is your local branch affected?

Supermarket shopping is constantly changing as more retailers aim to cut back on waste. Marks & Spencer has introduced a way to reduce packaging.

The range includes more than 60 essential food items that are displayed out of all packaging.

Instead, customers can bring their own reusable containers and fill up on what they need.

Groceries available include pasta, rice, cereal, nuts, frozen fruit and bake-at-home items such as croissants, pain aux chocolats and apricot twist.

Doing this will allow customers to shop while cutting back on waste.

Using the Fill Your Own section also works out cheaper per gram than buying the packaged alternative.

M&S also has plans to continue to introduce new lines, with a total of 100 different groceries being available later this year.

After a successful trial, the initiative will soon be featured in a total of 11 stores.

It will be found at Lisburn, Stratford City London, Sears Solihull, Gyle, Vangarde Monks and Wolstanton Stoke.

This is in addition to facilities already in Manchester, Hedge End and Staines Two Rivers.

The environmentally-friendly concept comes as part of M&S plans to reduce and reuse more than 300,000 units of single use packaging in the next year.

The retailer recently helped cut back on waste by turning freshly baked unsold baguettes and boules into garlic bread.

Following a successful trial, this is something now done in 200 stores across the country.

Head of Sustainable Business Carmel McQuaid said: “Fill Your Own has been hugely popular with our customers since it launched.

“They’ve told us that it’s easy to understand, offers a huge variety of the high-quality, great value M&S products they love and supports with portion control.

“Importantly, Fill Your Own is helping our customers – and our business – to reduce and reuse plastic and this initiative has the potential to save thousands of units each year.

“As our customers have navigated this completely new way of shopping, we’ve continued to test, learn and adapt the scheme based on their feedback and now we’re ready to expand it to more locations and introduce new product lines.”
