‘It would always be up to Steven Soderbergh if there was a story, we have lost a couple of our members, so we would have to figure it out, we are a depleted gang now,’ said Matt of the director who put together George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt as well as Casey Affleck for the three films.

Also while on the morning chat show, Damon said that he was proud to be a part of the movie Stillwater in which he plays an oil rig worker going to France to get his daughter out of prison.

Damon said that there were oil rig workers that showed him how they did their job: ‘They work as hard as anyone can work, it’s real.’ And the men took Matt to meet their families, which he appreciated.

The Oscar winner added that he loved working in Marseille: ‘It has such a good vibe, I would love to go back there… that is the city that Jason Bourne got pulled out of the water.’

And Matt shared that he cried after a standing ovation at Cannes because he is ‘getting old.’

He also said that his daughters are hard on him. ‘They’re entering that adolescence where dad is really not cool. I try to explain how cool I really am, and they are not buying it. One of my daughters doesn’t watch my movies that she think may be good but if the movie gets bad reviews she’s into it,’ he said.

Matt added that he did not write with Ben Affleck for a long time because it took so long to craft Good Will Hunting. But now they know the process better. Their next project is The Last Duel.

Damon has been making the rounds to plug the crime drama, which premiered earlier this month at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.

The Oscar winner plays an oil worker who travels from Oklahoma to Marseille, France to reunite with his estranged daughter, who is in prison for a murder that she did not commit.

Litte Miss Sunshine star Abigail Breslin plays his wrongly-accused daughter, Allison, who Damon’s character is determined to exonerate.

Camille Cotton, Lilou Siauvaud and Deana Dungan also star in the film which was met with rave reviews and received a standing ovation at the festival.

Stillwater will be released in the theaters on July 30. It was previously set to premiere on November 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Damon recently talked about reuniting with Ben Affleck to write a script for the first time in 25 years.

The friends worked on the screenplay for The Last Duel with Nicole Holofcener, the first time they have written together since their breakthrough film Good Will Hunting, which was released in 1997.

Speaking on The Tonight Show, Matt said: ‘It’s the first movie we’ve written in 25 years or something, and we wrote with another great writer named Nicole Holofcener. We saw it as a story of perspective, and so Ben and I wrote the male perspectives and Nicole wrote the female perspective.’

Matt previously admitted they have become more efficient at writing since their first attempt.

He told Entertainment Tonight: ‘I think that writing process for Good Will Hunting was so inefficient.

‘You know, because we didn’t really understand structure so we wrote thousands of pages. … We’d be like, “Well, what if this happened?,” and then we’d just write different scenes. So, we had all these kind of disparate scenes and then we kind of tried to jam them together into something that looked like a movie.

‘But this time around, you know, it’s a story about perspective. So, there are two knights and then there’s the Lady Marguerite. So Ben and I wrote the male perspectives and Nicole Holofcener wrote the female perspective. That’s kind of the architecture of that movie.

‘And I think we just found that having made … like, making movies for 30 years, we actually learned something about structure along the way and the process went along a lot faster.

‘And so I think we’ll write a lot more in the future just because it didn’t turn out to be as time consuming as we thought. It was actually a lot of fun.’

Meanwhile, Damon wishes people had more compassion for others when it comes to the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Contagion star would love to see everyone get the vaccine in order to help ‘protect’ those who are unable to be jabbed for health reasons, but has said people often don’t think about others when it comes to their own health.

He said: ‘It’s tough for me, I have a couple friends who are immunocompromised, and they can’t get the vaccine, so they have no choice but to rely on the rest of us to do our part to get to herd immunity. So I look at it that way.

‘I wish at the beginning of this people came out and said, “Look, if we all do this, then we’ll protect each other better, rather than “Well, I’m not in this cohort so I don’t have to worry and it’s not going to hurt me that much.” It’s just about looking at this as ‘me’ thing or an ‘us’ thing.’

And Matt hopes people ‘trust science’ more than the misinformation that can be spread by social media.

He added to Yahoo!: ‘But look, it’s a personal choice. That’s the beauty of America, it’s a free country. And none of us would have it any other way. But I fall heavily on the side of trusting science more than something you read on Facebook.’

Matt revealed last year his 21-year-old daughter Alexia and her college roommates all caught COVID-19 ‘early on’.

He said: ‘Our oldest daughter is in college, she’s in NYC. She had Covid really early on, along with her roommates and got through it fine.’

The Bourne Identity star also admitted he was worried about his mother or mother-in-law contracting the virus. He added: ‘But everybody’s OK. For Lucy’s mum and my mum, it’s scary for that generation…

‘I think we’ve all got the message now, everyone’s doing the isolation and social distancing and hand-washing and everything we can to mitigate this but it’s frightening, certainly for our parents.’
