Newcastle midfielder Miguel Almiron makes damning admission he ‘would like to play in a team that fights more’ sparking speculation he could leave Steve Bruce’s struggling side

  • Miguel Almiron’s comments come after a lifeless, limp 3-0 loss against Brighton
  • Last November his agent suggested the Paraguayan would be moving on soon
  • Relegation-threatened Newcastle have won just of their last 18 league games

Newcastle midfielder Miguel Almiron has conceded he wants to play in a team that ‘fights more’, fuelling speculation he could leave the club this summer.

Steve Bruce’s struggling side have only won two of their last 18 league games and lie just two points off the relegation zone – albeit with a game in hand on Fulham in 18th – after a disastrous 3-0 defeat against Brighton before the international break.

Unpopular owner Mike Ashley has backed Bruce to turn things around despite speculation the 60-year-old would be sacked, but the manner of the Magpies’ performances have left much to be desired.

And Almiron – himself an energetic, conscientious player – openly admitted he is keen to move away from St James’ Park in a damning indictment of the Bruce regime.

He told Paraguayan radio station ABC Cardinal on Friday: ‘I would like to play in a team that fights more,’ although he went on to say he feels ‘happy’ and ‘comfortable’ in the North East.

Almiron’s agent Daniel Campos made similar noises in November 2020, suggesting that without the coronavirus pandemic, the 27-year-old may have already left.

He told Futbol 970:  ‘Miguel Almirón was being observed by Atletico Madrid but no offer was made. When everything returns to normal, Miguel will take a leap in quality.

‘Miguel’s work rate at Newcastle and Paraguay has been great. If it wasn’t for the pandemic, he would’ve been elsewhere. Perhaps he would like to play on a team that has a lot of possession. Maybe in June, he’ll make that jump.’

The 26-cap Paraguay international, whose contract ends in summer 2024, has scored four goals in 21 league appearances this season.

Given Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin are currently out injured, Almiron is likely to have to shoulder the attacking burden in Newcastle’s next game, against Tottenham on April 4.
