Speaking with Keke Palmer for Vogue, Normani said her appearance at the luxe gathering was the realization of a dream.

‘I can’t believe I’m here,’ she said. ‘Like I’ve only dreamt of being at the Met Gala, let alone wearing Valentino!’

Normani said her outfit, based on the gala’s theme of In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, was ‘Black real excellence.

‘You know what I’m saying, yellow is our color as you know, pops on dark skin and I just feel regal, I feel like a queen,’ she said. ‘I’m just really really blessed and grateful I got to be here. I’m excited, I can’t contain myself.’

‘I feel like music and fashion are hand-in-hand, both are very much an expression,’ she said. ‘For me fashion is my outlet, music is my outlet, dancing is my best language and so that’s how I communicate … I’m excited for everything.’

Normani was coming off a banner evening at the MTV Video Music Awards from the Barclays Center on Sunday, as she performed her single Wild Side, which included a memorable cameo from Teyana Taylor.

The annual event finally returned after being cancelled in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, it was pushed to September from its traditional slot in May.

Monday’s event featured a heavy-hitting contingent of celebrity co-chairs: actor Timothée Chalamet, musician Billie Eilish, poet Amanda Gorman and tennis star Naomi Osaka. Honorary chairs for the evening included designer Tom Ford, sponsor Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour.
