Oleksandr Usyk has revealed that the beginning of March would be the ideal time for him to face Tyson Fury in the first undisputed heavyweight unification bout of the four-belt era. The Ukrainian says that he will not fight during the Easter period in April as he will be fasting – as is tradition in his orthodox Christian faith.
Usyk’s request shouldn’t be a hindrance to the fight with Fury’s promoter Frank Warren recently disclosing that they are targeting February or early March. Conversations continue between both parties with a date and venue expected to be agreed upon in the not-so-distant future.
“Right now, my team is seeking conversations with Tyson Fury, and he is really an unpredictable person, so we can’t guarantee when,” Usyk said at an appearance in Lisbon to speak about the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“For me, the idea would be to fight maybe early February or the beginning of March, like March 4, because I am an orthodox Christian. During the great fasting before Easter, I do not fight, so it should be all before or then after orthodox Easter [April 16].
Before the fight can take place, Fury squares off against Derek Chisora on December 3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The fight has received a negative response with few giving Chisora much of a chance having already convincingly lost to Fury in 2011 and 2014.
Since then, Fury has gone on to establish himself as one of the best heavyweights of his generation while Del Boy has remained a fringe contender.
