Olympic swimming legend Ian Thorpe is set to produce a new Australian film titled Streamline.

The film will tell the story of a Gold Coast teenager, played by Levi Miller, with a goal of making it to the Olympics.

Ian, 38, told Channel Seven’s Sunrise on Wednesday, he chose to work on the film after ‘connecting to the script’.

‘I’ve been given different scripts for films over a period of time and this was the first one that I connected with and wanted to be involved with,’ he said.

He continued: ‘It’s a drama about a young man realising what he can do and having all of the potential in the world, and then having to realise that he is exceptional.

Ian also revealed how he worked alongside Levi and taught him the ‘mannerisms’ of swimmers.

‘There are so many films that I’ve seen where I look at the swimmers and they’ve got no idea what they’re doing and we didn’t want that to be the case in this film.’

Ian will also make a brief appearance in the film.

Streamline will hit selected cinemas on September 2 and will be available to stream on Stan later this year.

Ian retired from his swimming career at the age of 24 after breaking 22 world records and winning an abundance of medals.

The Olympic star battled crippling depression in his teens and he previously said it had led him to drink during the night in the lead-up to the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Ian is now the chair of the Australian Institute of Sport’s Athlete Wellbeing Advisory Committee and supports other athletes who are facing similar problems.
