The Health Secretary insisted the Government is not looking at the measure “yet”, but that he could not rule out the policy ever being introduced. Mr Javid’s comments come after France announced over-65s will be required to have a third jab to access public spaces such as trains and restaurants from December 15.

During an appearance on Sky News this morning, the Health Secretary was asked about France’s new rule for Covid boosters.

Mr Javid said: “We’re not looking at that yet.

“We are very focused on our booster programme, as you would imagine.

“Over 10.6 million boosters, I think, throughout the UK so far already, a record number of bookings, many people coming forward.

“I think in due course we will have to look at what constitutes vaccination.

“But at this point, the most important thing is that anyone that’s eligible gets out there and gets their booster.”

Asked if the UK could follow France in the future, Mr Javid said: “I can’t rule that out.

“And I think that we know now that the vaccines do wane and it is important that those vaccines, where it’s necessary… that those people get a top-up.

He told Sky News: “This isn’t about perfection … we don’t live in a risk-free world.

“This virus, we’re learning about it all the time and it’s our duty to make sure that we’re doing everything we can, using all the tools that we have, to protect people.”

Mr Javid added: “I’m not pretending, nobody is saying that you could have a 100% method of protecting them, but what you can do is reduce the chances of them becoming infected, and I think it is perfectly reasonable to say to everyone that works in health and care, please take this vaccine – some 93 percent have had at least one shot and that’s fantastic to see.

“There’s still around 100,000 we estimate in the NHS that have not.”

The UK reported a further 39,329 coronavirus cases and 214 deaths in the Government’s latest figures.
