'Performed pose' Prince Harry and Meghan Markle showcase signature stance in Time shoot

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were named two of Time’s top 100 “most influential” people in September, and appear on the cover of one of the magazine’s editions. However, body language expert Judi James suggested the Sussex royals have a “staged look” in one of their photos for Time.

In an accompanying write up, writer José Andrés praised Meghan and Harry for their “compassion”.

He wrote: “In a world where everyone has an opinion about people they don’t know, the Duke and Duchess have compassion for the people they don’t know.

“They don’t just opine. They run toward the struggle.”

However, Ms James took issue with their photoshoot and called it “unnatural and staged”.

Speaking to Fabulous Digital, Ms James noted Meghan and Harry have a tell for when they are using a “signature Hollywood pose”.

She said: “Eye-ball to eye-ball gazing can be used by a couple to transmit all sorts of messages, from ‘I love you’ to ‘Put that pint down, we’re leaving!’…

‘Combined with the kind of matching smiles Harry and Meghan are wearing it is also supposed to let us know they are each other’s fan.

“When you do it as you are walking along like the Sussex’s though, it is actually an adopted pose rather than a natural and comfortable body language set-piece when performed as you walk along.

“A swift glance might be natural but to walk and eye-gaze is tricky and unnatural, suggesting the Sussex’s adopt this look as a signal to the world rather than a spontaneous ritual.”

Continuing her remarks, Ms James suggested the eye contact Harry and Meghan used in the Time photos “look rather rigid”.

She said: “It suggests that this is a staged look as walking while prolonged eye-gazing would normally end in a tumble! It looks like a performed pose they like to use for the cameras.

“We can see their smiles look rather rigid and over-performed here too, echoing the suggestion that it is an important message for them to send out of unity and devotion.

“It is used more in the world of Hollywood red carpet posing, with celebrities like J-Lo and Ben using it to show they are an item and only have eyes for one another.

“When the cameras are off though most celebrities will drop the look as it is impractical.”

    DON’T MISS

It comes after Ms James told the Mirror the Time pictures show a “very different face of Harry and Meghan”.

The expert believes it captures the power balance between the two, with it “weighting in Meghan’s favour” while Harry “follows”.

She added: “She [Meghan] was the lead in the Oprah interview and Harry arrived later, with Meghan placing her hand on his to offer reassurance as he told his tale of woe.

“His power and status signals did increase as he spoke to Oprah but the interview was primarily between the two strong and confident women.”

Harry and Meghan were profiled in Time Magazine, and have said they are “humbled” by their inclusion in the “most influential” list.

Continuing his remarks, Mr Andrés said: “Springing into action is not the easy choice for a young Duke and Duchess who have been blessed through birth and talent, and burned by fame.

“It would be much safer to enjoy their good fortune and stay silent. That’s not what Harry and Meghan do, or who they are.

“They turn compassion into boots on the ground through their Archewell Foundation. They give voice to the voiceless through media production.

“Hand in hand with nonprofit partners, they take risks to help communities in need—offering mental-health support to Black women and girls in the U.S., and feeding those affected by natural disasters in India and the Caribbean.”
