Sir Keir Starmer believes he is “turning the party around” as he said Labour needed to stop looking inwards to make inroads to electoral success. The Labour leader squirmed as Piers Morgan asked about the party’s recent losses in elections. The former Good Morning Britain presenter said: “You’re trailing a prime minister in the polls who – vaccine rollout excluded – has had a pretty diabolical year. And it does beg the question, how can it be that he’s gaining popularity and winning by-elections, stealing seats from you that you’ve had for decades.
“What are you going to do to get that change going in the party, show your leadership and actually present to the country a vision that they might think is better than Boris Johnson?”
Sir Keir replied: “Of course, I’m not going to pretend the last few weeks have been easy but there has been a huge emotion that runs through the Labour party.
“And we lost in Hartlepool, we lost badly, and when you wanna win it hurts to lose. There’s emotion there.”
Mr Morgan noted: “Your critics would say there’s not enough emotion from you.”

The Labour leader interjected: “Look, there’s a huge passion, but passion comes in different shapes and sizes.”
Piers added: “But ultimately you’ve got to turn the Titanic round before it sinks. That’s where you are, right?”
Sir Keir continued: “We’ve got a huge job, Titanic or otherwise, but we are getting on with it.
“We need to make the persuasive argument about why Britain would be better under Labour. We need to be patriotic and proud about it.”
Sir Keir said the three things which would describe a Britain under his leadership would be “pride in our country, dignity… dignity for children growing up, dignity at work, and change”.
And he said already he was proud of his work to rid anti-Semitism from the party.
“We had to make changes, so on things like anti-Semitism, it was really important to me and to the party, I think, to the country that we dealt with anti-Semitism,” he said.
“We’ve begun to do that, taken some really, really important steps. We’re turning the party around.”

During the interview Sir Keir refused to say whether he had ever taken drugs, despite Mr Morgan asking him several times.
“I spent my university days in the library,” he said.
But asked whether he really spent all his time studying, he said: “No, we had a good time. We had a good time.
“We went to bars, went to gigs. We worked hard, we played hard.”
