The future King was married to Diana for 15 years, between 1981 and 1996. Their two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, will both be present for the ceremony.

Harry has flown over from California, where he’s lived since stepping down as a senior royal, for the occasion.

He is currently self-isolating at Frogmore Cottage due to coronavirus rules.

The statue unveiling is taking place on what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, a friend of Prince Charles admitted he finds these anniversaries emotional.

They said: “He does find it terribly difficult.

“These moments have the potential to resurface old wounds, and it brings back memories for him; happy, sad, regretful.

“Since Diana’s death, he has felt it’s best to keep those memories to himself and leave his sons to it.”

The statue is located in Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden, which Diana used to enjoy visiting.

William and Harry will appear together at the unveiling, for the first time since Prince Philip’s funeral in April.

Relations between Harry and the wider Royal Family have deteriorated dramatically over the past couple of years.

In January 2020 the Sussexes’ announced their intention to step down as working members of the Royal Family.

After a brief spell in Canada they settled in California, Meghan’s home state.

In March 2021, the couple gave an incendiary interview to US talk show legend Oprah Winfrey.

Meghan alleged there were “concerns and conversations” within the Royal Family about Archie’s skin tone, ahead of his birth in 2019.

She added: “That was relayed to me from Harry.

“Those were conversations that family had with him.”

Harry confirmed discussions had taken place commenting: “That conversation, I am never going to share.

“At the time, it was awkward, I was a bit shocked.”

Neither the Duke nor Duchess would say which family member had made the remark.

However Ms Winfrey later confirmed it was neither the Queen nor Prince Philip.

Writing for 9Honey, royal author Victoria Arbiter suggested the statue unveiling could bring William and Harry closer together.

She said: “If the brothers are unable to bury the hatchet for themselves, perhaps they’ll consider doing so for their mum.

“I can’t help but think if she were alive today, Diana’s greatest birthday wish would be to see a positive reconciliation between her two equally adored sons.”
