Prince Harry 'can never forgive himself' for heartbreaking move to 'cut Diana off'

Prince Harry ‘told Queen he’d name child after her’ says expert

The then 12-year-old prince cut short a conversation with the Princess of Wales because he was “having fun playing with his cousins” in 1997. Just a day later Diana, who was travelling with her boyfriend Dodi al-Fayed, was killed when the car they were travelling in crashed in a Parisian tunnel.

Harry, Diana’s youngest son, spoke about the incident years after her death.

Writing in the Telegraph, royal expert Angela Levin, who has met and written a book about the Duke of Sussex, said that the birth of his daughter Lilibet Diana this week “might” help him get over the guilt he still feels.

She added: “Diana rang him when he was on holiday at Balmoral with his father the day before she died, and he cut short the conversation because he was having fun playing with his cousins.

“He has said he can never forgive himself for it.”

She added: “In conversations with me for his biography, Harry admitted: ‘My way of dealing with it was sticking my head in the sand, refusing to ever think about my mum, because why would that help?

“I told myself: ‘It’s only going to make you sad. It’s not going to bring her back’.

“He reluctantly sought therapy, and is now no longer embarrassed by his need – even allowing himself to be filmed during a specialist therapy session for The Me You Can’t See, his mental health documentary series on Apple TV with Oprah Winfrey.”

Ms Levin, who wrote Harry: Conversations with the Prince, shared the recollection as Harry, 36, and wife Meghan, 39, welcomed their second child into the world.

Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor is named firstly after Queen Elizabeth II’s childhood nickname.

Her middle name is in memory of her grandmother – who died aged 36 after a highly publicised and acrimonious divorce for Prince Charles.

Both her sons were very close to the princess but remained firmly in the royal fold after her death.

This remained the case until Harry met Meghan, a Hollywood actress and model, in 2017.

The pair’s whirlwind romance led to a televised marriage at Windsor Castle just 18 months later before they began frontline royal duties.

However the honeymoon period didn’t last long and they stepped back as senior royals last January in search of a “private life”.

The pair later moaned about being cut off financially by Prince Charles and went on to sign multi-million dollar deals with the likes of Netflix and Spotify to fund the lavish lifestyles they are accustomed to.

While this progressed, Harry’s relationship with the rest of his family became increasingly strained.

A bombshell interview the Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave to Oprah Winfrey in March sent things into overdrive when they accused the Royal Family of racism.

Prince William, 38, later publicly denied that this was the case.

Since then the two camps have shared increasingly bitter insults.

It has been hoped that Lilibet’s birth could ease tensions.

But sceptics claim that Harry has burnt too many bridges for him to ever be welcomed back into the royal fold.
