Property: ‘Substantial increase’ in commuter town locations – Exeter leads the way

With Britons still working from home, many are willing to live further away from their place of work and relocate to neighbouring towns. A new report by Dojo unveils which commuter towns and cities in the UK have see the biggest growth during the pandemic.

Eastbourne came in second on the commuter town list, growing by 15.88 percent.

The town is an 86 minute train journey from central London, offering affordable housing and a seaside location.

Jon Knott, Head of Customer Insights at Dojo said: “During the course of the coronavirus pandemic, the interest in commuter towns has seen a substantial increase.

“With working from home here to stay and less time needing to be spent in the office, many city dwellers have decided to relocate from built up urban areas.

In third place was Worthing, which saw a 4.26 percent growth throughout 2020, as well as an increase in its average salary from £32,274 to £35,852.

Property sales also increased from 140 from January to 174 In November 2020.

Norwich followed Worthing with an increase of 4.53 percent increase and Oxford after which saw a 4.22 percent increase.

In sixth place was Cambridge, followed by Rochdale, Milton Keynes, Slough and Crawley.

Using the same indicators, Dojo also looked into the effect of growing commuter towns to see the impact on their connected cities.

Bradford saw the biggest hit, with a decrease of 24.5 percent where property sales at a much slower rate than any of the other UK cities. 

Newcastle upon Tyne took the second spot with the city declining in growth by 17.23 percent as working from home became the new normal.
