In a last-ditch show of force, Russian forces have reportedly targeted civilians with incendiary ammunition in Nikopol in southern Ukraine. Footage captured from a considerable distance shows the ammunition exploding in the sky like fireworks. The attack was perpetrated in the vicinity of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Michael MacKay, a Ukrainian war commentator, tweeted: “The Russian terrorist state is bombarding civilians in Nikopol with incendiary munitions. The Russo-terrorists are firing from the vicinity of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.”

In a Twitter thread, Mr MacKay posted another video of the Russian attack, with CCTV footage showing the incendiary ammunition raining down on the city.

The war commentator added: “What further atrocity must Russians commit for countries to recognize #RussiaIsATerroristSate or designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism?

“According to the US Government, Cuba is a state sponsor of terrorism but the Russian terrorist state is not. This is a world gone mad.”

Russian forces fired more than 100 shells on residential buildings and critical energy infrastructures like gas pipelines and power lines, the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform reported.

More than three dozen apartment blocks and private houses, two kindergartens, a school and shops were targeted, the agency said, adding a six-year-old daughter and her mother were injured in the attack.

“The Russians tortured Nikopol district all night long… A 6-year-old girl was seriously injured… The district came under enemy Grad and heavy artillery fire seven times,” Valentyn Reznichenko, Head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, posted on Telegram.

The series of attacks carried out by Russian forces across Ukraine comes on the back of the weekend’s attack on the Kerch bridge in Crimea.

Since the explosion of the strategic bridge, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has investigated the causes of the conflagration and the identity of the perpetrators.

Eight people have been detained, according to the Russian state-owned news agency TASS.

Citing a statement from the FSB, TASS reported: “The Federal Security Service, together with the Investigative Committee, established that the organiser of the terrorist attack on the Crimean Bridge was the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry, its head Kyrylo Budanov, employees and agents.

“Currently, five citizens of Russia, three citizens of Ukraine and Armenia, who participated in the preparation of the crime, have been detained within the framework of the criminal case.”
