Remainer Soubry piles pressure over Dominic Raab 'farce' amid Cabinet reshuffle

Anna Soubry, 64, voiced her concerns about the demotion of Dominic Raab during an appearance on the BBC’s Newsnight programme. The former MP for Broxtowe, who finished in a distant third place when she sought re-election as the leader of the Independent Group for Change in 2019, suggested it was illogical to demote Mr Raab from the Foreign Office just to give him the new post of Deputy Prime Minister.

Ms Soubry said: “The farce over Dominic Raab speaks volumes.”

She added: “He wasn’t good enough to be Foreign Secretary but apparently he is good enough to be Deputy Prime Minister and, in the event of anything happening to Boris Johnson, to be Prime Minister.”

But Soubry then went on to launch a blistering attack on Nadine Dorries, who has succeeded Oliver Dowden as Culture Secretary.

Soubry found herself on the other side of the referendum divide to the two Brexit-backing Cabinet Ministers she berated.

The ardent Europhile said: “The appointment of Nadine Dorries actually says everything that is wrong and rotten with this Prime Minister’s stewardship of this country.”

Soubry went on to say “she’s not up to the job” and also said the Mid Bedfordshire MP couldn’t even make it as a “bag carrier” under David Cameron or Theresa May.

Charles Walker, the chair of the 1922 Committee, can be heard saying, “oh dear, oh dear” as Ms Soubry continued with her tirade.

But Mr Raab, a one-time candidate for Conservative Party leader, had recently found himself facing mounting pressure over his handling of the crisis in Afghanistan.

It was also used by Michael Heseltine and John Prescott.

Despite having only recently assumed the position, Mr Raab deputised for the Prime Minister as First Secretary of State when Mr Johnson was hospitalised with COVID-19 in April 2020.
