A shopper, Karen Hobbs, tweeted an image of the white thongs, which have the words “lest we forget” printed below a red poppy. She received a number of angry and confused responses.

Sharing a screenshot of the webpage, Ms Hobbs tweeted: “Babe, are you ok? You’ve barely worn your Remembrance thong.”

Replying to the Tweet, one user, Nell Witty, wrote: “Christ. Obscene.”

    While Adam Fowler wrote, “WTF”.

Another user, Richard Phillips, questioned: “Why does this exist?”

And a third, Roz Ryan said: “What woman (of sane mind) wants white pants with a massive red blob on them?!”

However, others weren’t put off by the design, with a user called Meg writing: “Secret Santa gift sorted.”

Another, with the username BigApe217, asked where they could buy the underwear. They said: “That’s amazingly tacky. What’s the website they must do Christmas presents”

While Clyde Holcroft asked: “If Her Majesty the Queen isn’t wearing one of these when she lays a wreath at the Cenotaph I’ll be writing a very stiff letter to the Daily Mail.”

The thongs can be bought individually for a sale price of £15, down from £20.

You can also buy other poppy-themed thongs on the website, including one with an image of a traditional poppy field on it.

They also sell mugs, t-shirts and bumper stickers with the same theme.

This is not the first time Cafe Press has come under fire for its choice of slogans.

The online retailer was previously slammed for selling baby clothes and accessories featuring sexually explicit slogans including: “F*** me like a pornstar.”

Remembrance Sunday falls this weekend, on November 14.
