But while many agreed, others thought the complete opposite.

‘Under! I once encountered a spider hidden in the roll which was mounted in the over position,’ one fan wrote, while another added: ‘Under, because you use less!’

Others were extremely enthusiastic about being in the ‘over’ team, with one writing: ‘Over any day of the week. If I go somewhere and it’s under, I change it!’

‘Most definitely over!’ another added, while a third chimed in: ‘Over!!! The pattern tells you in needs to be over!’

While there are plenty of debates for and against both methods, some experts have said that the correct way to hang it is actually with the paper over the top, as hanging it under ‘increases bacteria risk’.

Sofia Charalambous, co-founder at Bathroom Origins, said when you place the paper so it comes out under the roll it is normally closer to the wall.

No other way? Others were incredibly passionate about being in the'over' team, with one writing:'Over any day of the week. If I go somewhere and it's under, I change it!'

This leads to increased risk of it coming into contact with bacteria and droplets, including from viruses like COVID-19, on the wall surface behind it.

‘If you are unfortunate enough to go to the toilet after someone who has COVID-19 and the toilet roll is under, not over, you are increasing your chances of coming into contact with the virus,’ said Sofia.

‘There is also a reason why toilet roll bars that have flaps on have the flaps going over, not under.’
