Rio Ferdinand questions Liverpool transfer policy with worrying prediction

Liverpool are lacking strength and depth in their forward areas due to a lack of activity in the transfer window, according to Rio Ferdinand. The Reds made just one signing in the summer window, bringing in defender Ibrahima Konate, but they decided to keep the faith with their existing attackers.

The £36million deal for Konate from RB Leipzig was sorted out early in the summer, prompting speculation Liverpool could be set for a big window.

However, the Merseyside club then decided to stick, rather than twist, focusing instead on giving current players new contracts, rather than signing new players.

Jordan Henderson, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Andy Robertson all renewed their deals over August, while some fringe players were sold.

Harry Wilson, Marko Grujic, Taiwo Awoniyi and Xherdan Shaqiri were all removed from the books in exchange for decent transfer fees, but Liverpool have kept a very similar looking squad for the 2021/22 campaign.

That has not hampered them so far this season, with 10 points taken from a possible 12 in the Premier League, but Ferdinand believes they could have done with some reinforcements up front.

JUST IN: Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp may expose transfer plans against AC Milan

Jota has played instead of Roberto Firmino so far this season alongside Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, but there is a feeling Jurgen Klopp is missing further competition for places.

Divock Origi has been handed a rare start against AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday night, while Takumi Minamino is on the bench.

However, with Shaqiri sold to Lyon, Origi and Minamino are the only viable alternatives to the first-choice four in Klopp’s front three.

Goals have not been hard to come by for Liverpool so far this season, with nine scored in their opening four Premier League matches.

But Ferdinand clearly believes their lack of depth could come back to bite them further on in the season, if injuries or loss of form strikes.
