Shane Warne shares heartfelt tribute to 'good mate and former manager' the late John 'Strop' Cornell

    Shane Warne paid tribute to the late John ‘Strop’ Cornell – who passed away on Friday after a 20-year battle with Parkinson’s disease aged 80.

    On Friday, the cricket great shared a heartfelt Instagram story post remembering the entertainment legend.

    The 51-year-old wrote: ‘Extremely sad to hear the news that my good mate and former manager John Cornell passed away.

    He revealed his nickname for John was ‘Corny’ and called him ‘a true Australian icon, visionary and a legend.’

    ‘We will miss you, your humour and wonderful sense of fun,’ he wrote, adding that his thoughts are with John’s wife, actress Delvene Delaney and their family. 

    Also paying tribute to the late Australian TV and film icon was Channel Nine journalist Leila McKinnon.

    She remembered John as a good friend and mentor to herself and her husband of 17 years, former Channel Nine boss David Gyngell.

    ‘It’s so sad to say goodbye to such a special man. We loved Corny for his irreverence, his rebelliousness, his kindness and his brilliance,’ she began. 

    She also reflected on his many milestones throughout his illustrious career in the media and entertainment industry – establishing World Series Cricket, producing on A Current Affair and creating Crocodile Dundee.

    Leila also said John had acted as a mentor to David, 55, throughout his career, saying that he showed her husband: ‘how to be a happy, generous, humble and community-minded man.’

    ‘At a time when Australian men were often expected to be hard and ego-driven, he showed him a different way.’ 

    Cornell got his start in the 1960s as a journalist for The Daily News in Perth.

    He later became a producer on Nine’s A Current Affair, which is where he discovered Paul Hogan, who was working as a rigger on the Sydney Harbour Bridge at the time.

    He became Hogan’s manager and eventual co-star on The Paul Hogan Show, where he played ‘Strop’.

    From there, he produced and co-wrote the screenplay for Hogan’s 1986 film, which became the highest grossing Australian film of all time.

    Cornell and his wife owned several properties around Byron Bay and surrounding areas in the 1980s, including a beachfront pad bought at the time for $325,000 dollars which they later sold for $10million to Harvey Norman heir Glen Norman.

    The Life and Times of John Cornell 

    John Cornell was born in Kalgoorlie on March 2, 1941 

    He worked as a milkman, bookmaker, and nightclub owner and eventually a print journalist for Perth’s Daily News

    In 1971, he met Paul Hogan while working as a producer on A Current Affair

    Cornell became Hogan’s manager and together they created The Paul Hogan Show 

    After The Paul Hogan Show ended in 1984, Hogan and Cornell wrote and produced Crocodile Dundee together in 1986 

    Years later, Cornell would become  fundamental to the establishment of World Series Cricket, which created the one-day form of the game

    He married his third wife, actress Delvene Delaney, in 1977

    Cornell later became a mini real estate mogul with multiple properties across Byron Bay and surrounding areas, including Hotel Brunswick in Brunswick Heads
