Aggie MacKenzie made the incendiary comment during an appearance on GB News. However the remark sparked outrage from Express.co.uk readers who branded her “a fool”, and hit out at “celebrities downing our national flags”.

Ms MacKenzie is best known for her appearances on the ITV show Storage Hoarders.

Speaking to GB News host Michelle Dewberry she said: “I am a bit funny about flags actually.

“When I’m driving through parts of Essex and you pass a house that’s got a big white van outside and an England flag, I go hmm.

“I just kind of assume, and this is me making my judgements, that people inside there might be slightly racist.”

She later added: “I think I’m not so much talking about the Union Jack, I’m talking about the England flag that’s just much more focused.

“I bet if I got to interview that person in Essex with the big white van outside, I know I’m making so many judgements, I think I might find the person inside might be a fan of Nigel Farage.”

However Ms Dewberry, who ran for the Brexit Party in the 2019 general election, defended flying the flag.

She commented: “I think that if somebody flies a flag, Aggie and they’re doing that because they’re proud of their country and one of their chosen ways of doing that is by flying the flag of their country then I think it’s absolutely their prerogative.

A third said: “I’m sick and tired of people criticising our culture including the flag, go to most countries and they fly their flags with pride.

    “Stop pulling our country down.”

A number of Welsh readers defended flying the English flag.

One from south Wales wrote: “People of England, fly your flag proudly in your own country.

“My dragon is up and I won’t be taking it down for anyone.”

A second commentator said: “So the rest of the world can fly their national flags with pride, but when the English fly their because [its] because they are racists.

“I am Welsh and fly my flag with pride and am totally at ease to see the English fly their flag.

“Although, after the football, my flag is the Union Jack.”

England, Scotland and Wales are all in the Euro 2020 competition, which kicked off earlier this month. However Northern Ireland failed to qualify.
