    What are soda crystals?

Soda crystals are made of sodium carbonate. They are an alkali, meaning among other things they can soften hard water – making your laundry extra soft, for example.

Soda crystals are a natural product, but because they are a chemical, you should wear rubber gloves while cleaning with them.

So, what can you use them for around the home?

    1 – Stove Cleaner

The abrasiveness of soda crystals makes them amazing at cutting through grease and grime.

Make a solution of soda crystals and water and use this to give your hob a good clean: it will be sparkling in no time.

4 – Make your mugs as good as new

Tea and coffee can leave unsightly brown stains at the bottom of your mugs. To get rid of these stains, try putting a teaspoon of soda crystals in each mug and topping up with boiling water.

Leave to cool and then rinse out as normal, and admire your mug’s new lease of life.

    5 – Cleaning oven racks

It’s the chore many of us end up putting off, but you should clean your oven racks every few months.

For a natural oven cleaner, try filling your bath with a few inches of water and adding a generous handful of soda crystals. Add your racks to the bath to soak for a few hours.

After giving the racks a scrub they should come up lovely and clean.

    6 – Drain cleaner

Because of soda crystals’ knack at cutting through grease, they can make a handy drain cleaner.

Just pour 100 grams of soda crystals down the drain, followed by a pint of hot water. This should remove any greasy deposits and make your drain more efficient.

    7 – Washing machine cleaner

You should give the drum of your washing machine a good clean at least once a month, as it’s likely to get mould and mildew.

Adding a handful of soda crystals to the drum and doing an empty spin on 90 degrees will keep your machine in tip-top condition.

    8 – Floor cleaner

Add a tablespoon of soda crystals to a bucket of hot water for a homemade floor cleaner.

For added fresh scent add your favourite essential oils.

9 – Remove moss from your patio

Sprinkle soda crystals on any moss growing over your path or patio and add water.

Once the moss turns brown you can just brush it away with an outside broom.

    10 – Clean silverware

Make your silverware sparkle with soda crystals. Start by lining a bowl with foil and pour in hot water.

Add a handful of soda crystals to the water and wait for them to dissolve. Then, add your silverware.

You’ll see some fizzing as the crystals get to work, leave for a few minutes before removing the silver and rinsing it off.
