Channel 10’s big mistake: Network announces The Bachelorette is coming back for a new season… hours before Brooke Blurton’s premiere bombs in the ratings

Channel 10 announced at yesterday’s Upfronts presentation that both The Bachelor and The Bachelorette would be returning in 2022.

But this may have been a mistake because just hours later Brooke Blurton’s season of The Bachelorette premiered to disastrous ratings.

In a shocking example of bad timing, the dating show was renewed right as the franchise recorded its lowest-ever audience.

The Bachelorette premiere clocked in a pitiful 397,000 metro viewers, which lifted slightly to 500,000 nationally.

Not only was it the worst Bachelorette opener, but it was lowest launch of any season of The Bachelor, Bachelorette or Bachelor in Paradise ever.

It bombed across the board, underperforming in all key demographics.

By comparison, last year’s season starring sisters Elly and Becky Miles recorded 628,000 metro viewers.

That’s a drop of 36 per cent between the two seasons.

The result may come as a surprise to viewers and advocates who pushed for more diversity on the dating show.

Brooke Blurton is the franchise’s first Indigenous and first bisexual Bachelorette – a global first across all iterations of the franchise.

It was hoped that factor, along with having both men and women trying to win the youth worker’s affection, would be more of a selling point for potential viewers.

Channel 10’s renewal of The Bachelorette and The Bachelor in 2022 also came after this year’s season of The Bachelor tanked.

Jimmy Nicholson’s season, which aired from July to September, recorded dire ratings throughout its entire run.

It had both the lowest season premiere audience figures at 482,000 viewers – only ‘beaten’ by Brooke’s season premiere – and the lowest finale ratings at 629,000.

Channel 10 has struggled in the ratings over the previous few years as the network has been consistently outmatched by both Seven and Nine.
