The Block dominated the TV ratings on Sunday night, proving Nine’s drama-filled renovation show is still Australia’s No. 1 when it comes to prime-time viewing.

The season 17 finale had a five-city metro audience of 1,555,000, which swelled to 1,835,000 for the winner announcement at the end of the episode.

Sunday was an incredible result for The Block, which ran for 50 episodes this year.

The program had actually struggled early in the season when it lost almost half its audience to Channel Seven’s The Voice Australia in August.

But The Voice only had a short run and The Block was able to make a full recovery, regularly drawing 800,000 to 900,000 metro viewers per night.

This year’s season, dubbed Fans vs Faves, featured heightened tension between the teams as well as a high-profile cheating scandal.

Mark added: ‘I think we’re in shock as we stuck to our guns about what we thought a family home was about and it was a big risk.’

Interiors take on a contemporary feel with neutral tones and subtle pops of colour, while skylights illuminate the space with natural light.

Other features include a basement floor with a media room and retreat area, as well as a steam room for an extra touch of luxury.

Mitch and Mark have certainly been vocal throughout the season, revealing what they really think of the judges’ criticisms.

On an episode in September, Mitch stormed off the set and told Darren Palmer, Shaynna Blaze and Neale Whitaker to ‘go f**k yourselves’ in an explosive piece to camera after they found fault in their kitchen not having a designated pantry.

Speaking to Woman’s Day magazine that month, the stylish granddads accused the expert panel of being ‘disrespectful’ by providing ‘silly, unfounded’ feedback about their rooms, calling for the judges to be replaced.

‘For Shaynna to make comments like ‘I hate it’ and then for Neale to say ‘it’s better for our room to burn down’… They know that people have worked really, really hard,’ Mitch lamented.

Mark agreed, arguing that Shaynna, Neale and Darren are ‘out of touch’ when it comes to the property market and aren’t fit to dole out advice.

‘The judges aren’t real estate agents – they don’t sell in the market,’ Mark said, adding: It would be good timing for the longevity of The Block to bring in people who have new ideas. Fresh blood would be great.’

‘And some talent,’ Mitch jeered, before suggesting he and Mitch should take over as judges.

Since premiering on Channel 9 in 2003, The Block, Australia’s richest reality program, has now awarded a total of $28,771,471 in prize money across 17 seasons.
