Boris Johnson backed the trade deal with Australia to act as a “prelude” to further deals for the UK in the future. The Prime Minister also paid tribute to Liz Truss, the UK’s Government International Trade Secretary, for her work in securing the deal.

Mr Johnson said: “This is the first free-standing free trade deal that the UK has done since Brexit.

“It is also therefore a prelude to further deals.

“It is the way into the comprehensive progressive transpacific partnership.

“Liz Truss our wonderful trade secretary has been working on that for a very long time.

“I just want to conclude by thanking Liz and her teams.

“I congratulate negotiators on both sides on what I think is a good deal for Britain and a good deal for Australia.”

Mr Johnson also told reporters outside Downing Street “Now, thanks to this deal, we hope there will be even more trade between the UK and Australia.

“The idea is that we will be able to do even more because we are taking tariffs off, so for Northern Ireland, Northern Irish machine tools, this will be good news.

Boris Johnson campaigned for Leave during the 2016 EU referendum.

The UK voted to leave the European Union following the crucial public vote.

Britain’s post-Brexit transition period with the EU ended on December 31 2020.

The UK and EU have clashed a number of times over the Northern Ireland protocol since Brexit.
