The Nanny star Charles Shaughnessy says Fran Drescher has come up with a ‘genius’ idea for a reboot of the sitcom

Charles Shaughnessy has given fans of The Nanny hope that there may be a reboot of the classic sitcom coming soon.

In an interview with Today Extra this week, the actor, 66, who played Maxwell Sheffield on the series, says his former co-star and show creator Fran Drescher, 63, has ‘genius’ ideas for a new series.

‘There’s a couple of ideas I’ve heard floating around. One of them that she’s come up with is a little bit of genius,’ he said.

‘If it can be pulled together, and there’s a lot of different strands involved then I could absolutely see it working.’

Charles admitted that reboots aren’t always easy to pull off, but he’s convinced Fran’s idea for an updated series could work.

‘Reboots are always difficult because everything has moved on,’ he said.

‘But if you can find a way of bringing those characters as they were but now 25 years later in a similar kind of framework of Miss Fine creating chaos to the long-suffering Maxwell then it can work. And this idea could do that.

‘I’m holding my breath with everyone else to see if it works out.’
