Gandolfini had been in Rome, Italy doing some sightseeing with his family before heading to Sicily a few days later to receive an award at the Taormina Film Fest.

After spending the day walking the streets in the sweltering summer heat, Gandolfini’s son Michael, then 14, discovered him unconscious on the bathroom floor of his hotel room.

He was pronounced dead 20 minutes after arriving at a local hospital. Hw was just 51-years-old.

Michael Gandolfini is playing a younger version of his father’s character Tony Soprano in the upcoming movie, The Many Saints of Newark, which will be released on October 1.

The crime drama film was co-written by The Sopranos creator David Chase, and is considered a prequel to the iconic HBO series.
