Worse than prison meals: The very ordinary food given to the SAS Australia recruits revealed… but Sam Burgess couldn’t get enough

SAS Australia stars were fed a diet of porridge and boiled eggs while filming the show, with one celebrity claiming the ‘grub was worse than prison food’.

Cajun chicken, lamb kofta and Thai beef noodle salad are among some of the items being fed to the 40,000-odd inmates who in Australia call prison home.

Compare that with what was on the menu for SAS stars currently challenging for bragging rights on Channel Seven’s hit show.

‘The food was absolutely dreadful. Porridge and a boiled egg for breakfast,’ said one celebrity contestant.

‘That was it. No coffee, no cereal, no bacon – no nothing. Most of us couldn’t stand it.’

‘They feed you better in prison. At least there you get toast and jam and a hot drink in the morning.

‘It was obviously part of the strategy which was designed to try and break us. What I would have given for a hash brown and sausage and egg McMuffin.’

And if you think breakfast was bad, then lunch and dinner doesn’t get much better.

For lunch the 18 celebrities competing in the show were fed a single wrap with lettuce and a small piece of chicken while for dinner it was generally one piece of chicken accompanied by either steam peas or lettuce leaves.

And that was it. No dessert or anything,’ said one celebrity contestant.

‘For the big guys like Sam (Burgess) and Mark (Philloupossis) it was tough going.

‘With the amount of energy being expended each day they would have been starving the whole time.’

‘There were times we would feel sorry for the bigger guys, and we would give them some of the food off our plate. It was sort of like seconds when there weren’t seconds.’

Tuesday’s episode saw celebrity chef Manu complain about the selection of food offered while competing on the military style series.

Sitting down alongside his recruits, the 48-year-old food critic seemed to have lost his appetite as he threw his spoon at the table.

‘You’re not having much luck with this,’ Jana Pittman commented.

‘I’m trying,’ he replied, before attempting to swallow another spoonful of porridge.

‘You don’t normally eat porridge like this?’ asked fellow recruit Mark Philippoussis.

An annoyed Manu replied: ‘No. I don’t eat porridge full stop… I eat food.’
