Tom Cruise ‘is learning to fly a World War Two military plane nicknamed The Widowmaker for stunt scenes in next Mission: Impossible’

Tom Cruise is reportedly learning to fly a World War Two military plane nicknamed The Widowmaker for stunt scenes in the next Mission: Impossible.

The actor, 59, is said to have been learning how to use a 1943 Boeing Stearman Model 75 after recently wrapping filming on Mission: Impossible 7.

A source told The Sun: ‘Tom had started to learn to fly a Boeing Stearman biplane earlier this year for a major stunt scene in Mission: Impossible 8.

‘It’s obviously a highly skilled task but as usual he has no plans to cut any corners or bring in a stuntman.

‘Filming has only just wrapped on Mission: Impossible 7 but Tom has not given himself a break. And trying to film jaw-dropping scenes with an 80-year-old plane is particularly dangerous.’

Tom was recently spotted in the aircraft during a training session at Cambridge’s Duxford Airfield.

MailOnline has contacted representatives for Tom Cruise for comment.

Tom has often performed his own stunts and previously scaled Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.

It comes after Tom was recently said to have split from his co-star Hayley Atwell.

An insider told The Sun about the split: ‘It has been a very intense period of filming together. They really got on well – but as the latest film winds down they’ve decided to go back to being friends.

‘Their filming schedules are very full-on, and Tom has a number of other commitments coming up and is always shooting around by private helicopter and jet so it just ran its course.

‘But they’re still happy to work together. It’s a shame, but just one of those things. They still get on well.’

MailOnline contacted both Tom and Hayley’s representatives for comment at the time.

The couple have been pictured in character on set and on location as they shoot the seventh instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise – often seen in tense action sequences together.

They turned up to Wimbledon’s 12th day on July 10, both smiling, sitting together in the VIP box and enjoying the tennis.

Since then, they have been pictured in Birmingham, filming scenes for the high-octane films, gladly greeting fans.

They added: 'Filming has only just wrapped on Mission: Impossible 7 but Tom has not given himself a break. And trying to film jaw-dropping scenes with an 80-year-old plane is particularly dangerous'

The duo were at Birmingham’s Bullring & Grand Central shopping centre in August, after Mission: Impossible 7 filming was paused and delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

They were said to have become ‘fairly inseparable’ after they ‘hit it off from day one’ on the film.

A source told The Sun last December: ‘Tom and Hayley hit it off from day one. Lockdown, and all the difficulties that came with it, brought them even closer and they’ve become fairly inseparable.

‘They’ve been meeting up after hours, and she’s been to his London pad. They get on brilliantly, and both seem very happy.’
