Tory rebellion LIVE: Boris facing heated revolt on tax hikes for Brits – Rees-Mogg furious

The PM’s proposal to raise National Insurance rates will break his 2019 manifesto promise. Under a heading titled “Boris Johnson’s Guarantee” and bearing his signature, Mr Johnson wrote: “I guarantee we will not raise the rate of income tax, VAT or National Insurance.”

Labour leader Keir Starmer also came out confirming the Opposition will oppose the NI rise.

Mr Starmer said: “We do need more investment in the NHS and social care but National Insurance, this way of doing it, simply hits low earners.

“It hits young people and it hits businesses. We need a fair way to raise the money that is needed.”
