Tottenham star Son Heung-min to undergo eye surgery as injury update provided

Tottenham have confirmed Son Heung-min will undergo surgery after suffering a fracturing to his left eye in Tuesday’s match against Marseille. Spurs celebrated a dramatic win over Marseille last night to qualify top of Group D ahead of next week’s draw for the round of 16.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg completed the comeback for Tottenham deep into stoppage time with a brilliant finish from the edge of the box to spark jubilant celebrations for the away side. But the victory was partly overshadowed by concerns for Son, who was forced off with an injury in the first half.

The South Korea international looked in some discomfort as he made his way off the pitch, although Tottenham assistant Cristian Stellini stated the forward felt better after the match. However, Son now looks set to miss Tottenham’s final three games before the start of the World Cup with the club confirming he will undergo surgery.

The statement read: “We can confirm that Heung-Min Son will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye. The South Korea international suffered the injury during the first half of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League victory at Olympique Marseille.

“Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course.”

While not confirming a timeframe for Son’s return, he’s almost certainly set to miss Tottenham’s game with Liverpool this weekend. Spurs are already 10 points clear of Liverpool, although Jurgen Klopp’s side have a game in hand on the north London side.

Son has started all-but one Premier League game for Tottenham this season, in which he scored a hat-trick when he came off the bench against Leicester. Antonio Conte went with a front three of Harry Kane, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski on that occasion.

But both Richarlison and Kulusevski are also injury doubts having not featured in training recently. Lucas Moura looks in line for his first Premier League start of the campaign against Liverpool while Bryan Gil may also be called upon.

Another option for Conte would be pushing Ivan Perisic further up the pitch as a winger. But the Tottenham boss has favoured Perisic in a more defensive role at left wing-back.
